In NSW, passengers have a range of vehicles and taxi services to choose from.
Whether you are seeking a regular cab, a VIP service or a maxi cab for group travel or for passengers in wheelchairs, NSW cabs cater for your needs.
When looking for a cab, use our ranks and take note of special ranks for major events.
Additionally, the NSW Taxi Service was the first taxi service in the country to introduce transport for people with special needs. |
1. Hailing a Taxi
To hail a Taxi, use designated Taxi Ranks or stand on the footpath and raise your arm to signal. A Taxi is available for hire if the orange light on top is lit.
Be mindful of traffic conditions, and do not expect Taxis to stop in dangerous locations. By law, Taxis are not permitted to stop in bus stops or no stopping zones.
Between the hours of 12:30pm and 4:30pm some Taxis will display a Destination Sign in the front window which indicates that their shift is finishing and they are headed in the stated direction to return the vehicle. A Taxi displaying this sign can refuse a fare if it is not in the general direction indicated by the sign.
2. Multiple Hiring
Multiple hiring is available when each hirer agrees, each hiring commences at the same time, and all passengers are traveling in the same direction.
The meter is paused at the first destination and the first hirer pays 75% of the due amount.
The meter is then restarted to the next destination where the next hirer pays 75% of the total fare - and so on.
Multiple hiring is encouraged during busy periods or when a number of people are traveling.
Please note that Drivers are not allowed to tout for fares.
