New Speeding Demerit Point Rules for NSW
New demerit rules for speeding offences in NSW will be introduced on July 1, 2009. The new rules will see the penalty for lesser offences reduced from three points to one and harsher penalties for high level speeding offences.
The rules apply to speeding offences committed on or after 1 July 2009. Speeding offences committed prior to this date will have the old demerit points scheme applied.
The changes mean that lower level speeding offences will now be defined by 10 km/h breakpoints to better reflect advice about speeding and road safety, and to more closely align speeding infringements with speed zones.
For holders of a full licence, the following demerit point system will apply:
- Up to 10km/h over the speed limit - one demerit point and an $84 fine.
- 11 to 20km/h over the limit - three points and a $197 fine.
- 21 to 30km/h over the limit - four points and a $338 fine.
- 31 to 45km/h over - three month suspension, five points and a $647 fine.
- More than 45km/h over - six month suspension, six points and a $1,744 fine.
Double demerits will continue to apply to any speeding offence committed during a double demerit points period.
An extra demerit point will continue to apply to speeding offences committed in a school zone.
