The NSW Taxi Industry is incensed and devastated at the attack on driver Robert Woodger, and is supporting his family and friends through a very difficult time.
Today’s funeral is about grieving an unnecessary tragedy, farewelling a colleague and supporting his family, it is not an opportunity to grandstand or a backdrop for a political campaign.
“It is incumbent on everyone associated with the Industry to show respect and consideration at this difficult time,” said Mr Howard Harrison, CEO, NSW Taxi Council.
“We have the best security initiatives in the world for drivers supported by tough legislation for those committing crimes against taxi drivers, and it remains our hope that whoever is responsible will be held fully accountable.
“Our confidence in the judiciary was certainly shattered on Tuesday when a man charged with a different crime against another driver was released on bail because it was his 18th birthday. That seemed a ludicrous decision for any crime against a taxi driver and our fears unfortunately came to fruition as the accused is now at large and wanted by the Police.
“I continue to remain hopeful that the judiciary will step up to the mark in these cases and use the full extent of the law available to them.”
