Electronic Short Fare System An Electronic Short Fare System applies at all
ranks at Sydney Airport. It’s designed to
improve the current process and to provide a better
service for taxi drivers and their passengers.
As a reminder – here’s how it works:
• Driver indicates a short fare by informing the officer at the rank prior to driving away.
• Taxi rank officer enters the taxi number into the system immediately.
• The taxi number is displayed on the taxi rank screen, at the Domestic holding bay and in the computer system inside the taxi control room (the time is also recorded in the control room).
• The driver should check the screen to ensure the taxi number is in the system prior to leaving the rank.
• The driver returns within the allocated time (all short fare returns proceed to Domestic Holding Bay only) – 20 minutes from Domestic, a little longer from International. • The driver proceeds to pay booths to pay
the $2.50 passenger fee.
• The driver then proceeds to the short fare lane within the holding bay (North side).
• The driver checks to see that the taxi number is still in the system on the large holding bay screen located at the front of the control room.
• If the taxi number is still on the screen and this is confirmed by the officer in the control room, the driver will be permitted entry to the terminal rank.
• If the taxi number time has expired, the driver must return to the end of the queue at the Domestic holding bay.
• The officers in the control room will not allow any taxi entry to the terminals unless the taxi number is current and is a valid number in the system.

What’s Changed? Since the introduction of the Holding Bay fee
at the Airport, the NSW Taxi Council has been
relentless in its efforts to gain more facilities
for drivers in return for the toll. The following facilities have been built, and the
Airport should be congratulated on its efforts: • A new food and beverage outlet in Domestic. • A new, larger Domestic Holding area, allowing
drivers to turn off their engines in the queuing
system to enable visits to the toilets and food
outlet. • Shaded recreation areas at both Domestic and
International. • Safe lifting signage at taxi ranks. • Dedicated pre- booked taxi bays at each Terminal.
• Improvements to the Terminal frontage
at Terminal 2 including resurfacing and additional
seating.
