The
New Regime at Sydney Airport
When Sydney Airport was sold
last June, it was the last major airport in Australia to be privatised
under the Federal Government’s airport privatisation policy.
How
Does This Affect Me?
If
you are like the majority of drivers and obey the rules, you can
only benefit from the changes with better traffic flow, greater
enforcement of rogue offenders, and fewer pedestrian safety issues.
However, if you are one of the handful of drivers still breaking
the rules, you will be caught and you will be fined.
Passenger
Pick Ups
Under Transport NSW’s regulations, the Taxi rank at the Airport
must be used for picking up passengers. This is unless the hiring
is “pre-booked”, and “pre-booked” is defined
as being through an “authorised network only” and not
by mobile phone or trunk radio. This was enforced from May and fines
levied against offenders.
Short
Fare System
Drivers are reminded to advise the Taxi Rank Officer that they have
a short fare before they leave the rank – once you have left,
you are not entitled to claim a short fare. To claim the short fare,
drivers must be back at the rank within 20 minutes – if you
exceed the 20 minutes you must proceed to the holding area.
New
Commissionaire Arrangements
At the request of Qantas, the Taxi Council's commissionaires no
longer work on the Qantas rank at Terminal 3. Qantas has requested
that new ground management experts, ilsons Parking, undertake the
duties previously performed by the Industry's personnel.
Trained commissionaries from the Taxi Industry continue to work
on Terminal 2.

Airport
Bus Service Axed
A huge opportunity has opened up for the Taxi Industry, following
the State Transit Authority’s decision to scrap it’s
bus service.
The service
has operated for 21 years, but management say that it is not viable
to maintain buses in addition to the new Airport-Link Rail Line.
The last bus
service was on 10 May 2003, and since then anecdotal evidence
suggests that passengers are opting for Taxis rather than catching
the train to the City.
Maxi Taxis At T1 Rank
Drivers are reminded that Maxi Taxis must queue in the holding
area with other Taxis – these vehicles are not allowed to
bypass the queue. There are no longer special queuing facilities
for Maxi Taxis.
