NSW boasts one of the largest taxi fleets in the Southern Hemisphere which provides world leading taxi services.

The NSW Taxi Industry is an integral part of the NSW public transport system and is regulated by the NSW Government under the Passenger Transport Act 1990.

Providing approximately 170-million passenger journeys a year, taxis offer 24/7 door-to-door services often in situations where other modes of public transport are not available or not accessible for passengers. There are 22,000 accredited taxi drivers and more than 7,000 taxis in NSW.

The Taxi Industry is the only mode of public transport that is not funded by government - it relies entirely on private investment. However, is co-regulated by government and the Industry itself. Government regulations exist to protect the customer and ensure that service delivery and safety standards are met.

The NSW Taxi Council is the peak body for the taxi industry, representing taxi owners and members of taxi networks. Taxi networks are authorised by the NSW Government to provide a taxi booking service, oversee safety and security systems in taxis, and monitor and report services standards. Every taxi in the metropolitan areas must be affiliated with an authorised taxi network.

Taxi operators are accredited by the government and are responsible for providing safe and roadworthy taxis.

Taxi drivers must hold a Driver Authority issued by the Government.

The NSW Taxi Industry led international innovation with the introduction of GPS tracking of taxis, the first with a non-cash system for payment of fares, and one of the first to move to satellite dispatch of bookings. Continued innovation delivers advanced in-vehicle technology and security systems, and world leading response times for taxi bookings. We have received a number of international awards from the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA) for our service standards.
