The NSW Taxi Council is calling on the NSW Government to take urgent action and adopt the recomendation by the Committee for Law and Justice to move Taxis and Rideshare into the same CTP insurance class.
Taxi operators across New South Wales are facing an unsustainable crisis.
Metropolitan Taxi Operators are now paying between $5,000 and $6,000 in annual CTP premiums, while many Country Operators are paying more than $5,200 — despite some paying less than $3,000 only a few years ago.
At the same time, Rideshare operators continue to pay significantly lower premiums of $500-$700 because they remain in Class 1, with millions of other Private vehicles.
We have one set of rules for Taxis, and another set of rules for Rideshare.
This is not Fair. This is not Sustainable.
Over the past 24 months, more than 600 taxis have left the road across New South Wales, with many regional towns losing critical transport services — including access to Wheelchair Accessible Transport.
For the first time, this issue has now been formally recognised by the NSW Legislative Council Standing Committee on Law and Justice.
In its report released in April 2026 following a review of the NSW CTP Scheme, the Committee acknowledged the ongoing decline in Taxi numbers linked to the legalisation of Rideshare and its negative impact on regional and rural transport services, including Wheelchair Accessible Taxis.

The NSW Taxi Council is calling on all Operators, Drivers, Networks and TSPs to take immediate action as part of the Make It Fair Campaign.
So far, only 16 appointments have been made with State MP's.
WE MUST DO BETTER AS AN INDUSTRY.
DO NOT WAIT! NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!
The success of this campaign will be reliant on the industry standing together and knocking on every MP's door. Every meeting with a local MP matters. Every conversation counts.
