The NSW Taxi Council has opposed a move by the NSW Government to extend the Uber PIN Trial at Sydney Airport for another six months, with the view to make it a permanent arrangement at the International Terminal.

The Uber PIN technology allows an Uber to ply for hire at the Airport's kerb side, prior to any booking being made by the passenger. Clause 84 (a) and (b) of the Point to Point Transport Regulations (2017) clearly define the requirements and conditions for a vehicle to be able to ply for hire. Uber does not meet this requirement. The NSW Government has provided an exemption for Uber to allow the trial to proceed.

NSW Taxi Council CEO, Nick Abrahim was live on 7News this afternoon, and said;

"When Rideshare services were legalised, the Laws provided a clear distinction between Rank and Hail services for Taxis, and Booked Services for Rideshare. These distinctions include the requirement for Taxis to be fitted out with Security Systems and Devices, such as cameras, duress alarms and GPS tracking, as well as signs and markings on a Taxi. These are not required for Rideshare services, including Uber.

Uber want to have the same access as Taxis and ply for hire, without having the same requirements as Taxis."

Nick also mentioned:

"The Government cannot intervene and provide an exemption to allow Uber to ply for hire, providing them with an unfair advantage. Trips that are made by Uber PIN, are at the expense of the Taxi Drivers earnings. This is unfair and unjust. You cannot have one rule for Taxis, and another rule for others (Uber)."

The NSW Taxi Council will continue to advocate with the NSW Government against this move.
