The NSW Government announced a $12.6 million NSW Taxi Industry Support package on 22 May 2020, part of which provides support in the form of subsidy of $2900 to eligible Taxi vehicle owners/operators.
The NSW Taxi Council has received an increased volume of queries regarding eligibility and payments for the subsidy. Please refer to the information below for clarity on eligibility and payment of the subsidy.
Eligibility for the $2900 subsidy
As per the NSW Government's eligibility criteria for the support package, if you de-registered your Taxi before 1 May 2020, you are not eligible for the subsidy, unless you have a Wheelchair Accessible Taxi (WAT).
Any standard Taxi de-registered before 1 May 2020 will not be eligible for the subsidy, even if it is registered again now or by 30 June 2020.
If you de-registered your Taxi after 1 May 2020 and re-register it again by 30 June 2020, you are eligible for the subsidy.
For Wheelchair Accessible Taxis (WAT)
As per the NSW Government's eligibility criteria for the support package, if you have a registered WAT vehicle, or in the case if it is de-registered, get it re-registered again by 30 June 2020, you are eligible for the subsidy.
Payments of the $2900 subsidy are now paid by cheque.
There has been a change in the way the subsidy will be paid.
Initially operators were going to have to apply for the subsidy through Service NSW. This is now changing.
You will no longer be required to register for the subsidy online via Service NSW's website.
Rather than having to apply for the subsidy, cheques will be automatically printed and sent to eligible vehicle owners based on the eligibility criteria explained in the previous section, above.
The amount of the cheques will change depending on the number of eligible vehicles you own. eg one vehicle $2,900, two vehicles $5,800, etc
The majority of the $2900 support payments from the NSW Government $12.6 million industry support package have been mailed out to eligible operators and presented to the bank. Any operator that believes they should have been eligible and didn't receive a payment is asked to contact to Industry Contact Centre on 131 727.
